This small garden in Catford had serious problems with Japanese Knot weed, a plant so pernicious that it can grow over six feet a year and is resistant to all but the strongest herbicides. Treatment of this weed can be expensive and in this case would have been a constant maintenance issue as the weed would simply re-establish itself from neighbouring gardens. The sunken oak sleepers create a hard surface for table and chairs and the turf covering the entire upper garden allows the Knot Weed to be mown off until it weakens and dies. Any further encroachment from neighbouring gardens is thus dealt with within the usual maintenance of the garden, with no greater effort or expense.
